Before the establishment of the Bank in February, 1987, the only financial institution operating in the District capital of South Tongu, Sogakope, was the Ghana Commercial Bank Limited (GCB). The Agave Traditional Area, being the largest amongst the five traditional areas forming the South Tongu District was inadequately served by the bank’s (i.e. GCB) services. The other four traditional areas are Tefle, Sokpoe, Vume and Fievie.
This inadequacy of financial services was heavily exploited by some traditional unlicensed money-lenders whose interest rates were extremely exorbitant and exploitative. This rendered loans granted by them very non-commercial.
Despite this fact, most enterprising farmers and traders had no other choice than to go for such sources of funding. At the same time, some of the farmers and traders who had excess cash kept their monies in unprotected safes in their insecure homes.
Support to south Tongu District Assembly
The Bank makes Annual donation of various farming tools and inputs to the south Tongu District Assembly in respect of District Farmers’ Day Celebrations.
